Shrimp Vietnam
Vietnam's shrimp industry has experienced rapid growth and solidified its position as a major global exporter, contributing approximately 35–40% of the country’s total seafood export value The Mekong Delta region dominates production, accounting for 91.7% of the national shrimp farming area, with key provinces including Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Ben Tre, and Tra Vinh As of the end of 2024, the total shrimp farming area reached 749,700 hectares, comprising 628,800 hectares of black tiger shrimp and 121,000 hectares of whiteleg shrimp Over the past six years, the farming area has grown at an average rate of 5% annually, while production has increased by 8.4% per year, driven primarily by significant improvements in whiteleg shrimp productivity
Whiteleg shrimp has become the dominant species, with production increasing by 82% over five years, averaging 13% growth per year, while black tiger shrimp production has declined by 1.5% annually over the same period In 2024, total shrimp production reached 1.29 million tons, a 15.3% increase from 2023, with whiteleg shrimp contributing 980,000 tons (up 16%) and black tiger shrimp 284,000 tons (up 3.6%) This growth has led to a projected export turnover of $3.9 to $4 billion in 2024, reflecting a strong recovery after a challenging period marked by high input costs and declining global demand
Frozen shrimp continues to dominate exports, making up around 60% of the total export value, although processed shrimp—especially in developed markets like the U.S., EU, and Japan—has seen growing market share, indicating strong potential for value-added products Vietnam currently has over 350 shrimp production facilities meeting international export standards, with the top five exporters accounting for nearly 35% of the country’s total export value The industry is supported by advanced processing technologies and a closed-loop supply chain, and shrimp is one of two strategic aquaculture species prioritized in Vietnam’s National Aquaculture Development Strategy
